How to create a UPI ID
You probably already have one. Here is how to find it, how to add a readable custom one, and what to do if you are starting from nothing.
First: you may not need to create anything
A UPI ID — also called a VPA, or Virtual Payment Address — is created automatically the first time you link a bank account in any UPI app. If you have ever paid for anything with UPI, one exists in your name already.
Where to look:
- Google Pay — profile picture (top right) → Bank accounts → tap an account.
- PhonePe — profile picture (top left) → UPI IDs.
- Paytm — profile → UPI & Payment Settings → UPI ID.
- BHIM — profile screen, shown at the top.
- Your bank’s app — usually a UPI section in the main menu.
It will look something like 9876543210@ybl or arun@okaxis.
That is all you need to generate a QR code or a
payment link.
Creating one from scratch
If you have never used UPI, the setup is the same in every app:
- Install a UPI app — your own bank’s app, or BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm. They all use the same underlying network.
- Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. This is the step people get wrong most often: the number in the app must be the number your bank has on file, in the phone, with an active SIM. The app sends a verification SMS from the device itself.
- Pick your bank from the list. The app finds accounts matching your number automatically.
- Set your UPI PIN. You will need your debit card’s last six digits and expiry, or Aadhaar-based verification where your bank supports it.
- Done. A UPI ID has been created for you, and the app will show it.
Your UPI PIN is not a password to share. It authorises money leaving your account. Receiving money never requires it. Anyone asking for your PIN so they can “send” you money is running a scam — here is how that works.
Creating a readable custom UPI ID
The auto-generated ID is often just your phone number. Most banks let you add a
human-readable one for free — arunsharma@hdfcbank reads far better on
an invoice than 9876543210@ybl, and it does not expose your phone number.
Look in your bank’s own app under UPI settings for “Create UPI ID”, “Manage VPA” or “Add UPI ID”. Support varies: bank apps generally allow it, while third-party apps like Google Pay and PhonePe usually do not let you choose the local part.
Practical notes:
- It must be unique across that handle, so common names are often taken.
- Allowed characters are typically letters, digits, dots, hyphens and underscores.
- It points at the same bank account — it is an extra address, not a new account.
- Your old UPI ID normally keeps working. If you have printed a QR using it, that QR stays valid.
Once you have one
Generate a QR code or a payment link from it and you can be paid by anyone with any UPI app — no aggregator, no merchant account, no fees, and settlement straight into your bank account.
- UPI QR code generator — a scannable image for counters and posters.
- Payment link generator — a tappable link for chat and invoices.
- Fixed-amount QR — bake the amount in so nobody mistypes it.
Common problems
“Mobile number not registered with the bank”
The number in your phone does not match the one the bank has. Update it at your branch or in net banking, then retry. The SIM must also be active in the device.
“Unable to set UPI PIN”
Usually wrong debit-card details, an inactive card, or a card that has never been used at an ATM. Some banks require one ATM PIN change before UPI can be enabled.
My bank is not listed
Nearly every Indian bank supports UPI, but small co-operative banks sometimes appear only in certain apps. Try BHIM, which carries the widest bank list.
Can I have more than one UPI ID?
Yes, and most people do — typically one per app per linked account. Just make sure the one you publish points at the account you actually want the money in.
